The Clay Johnson interview
Name: Clay Johnson
Age: 26
Hometown: Phoenix Arizona!
Hook-ups: Mirraco, Peg-Leg, TRU-CITY
Do you remember the moment you got into BMX?
Clay: Man when I was really young, about 9 or 10, I would always say I wanted to be a skater. Then I popped a board up and knocked my front tooth out and I was done with it haha. One of my friends in school raced bmx and would wear his leathers and jerseys to school all the time and I thought that was dope. Even though I never got the chance to race I had a bmx bike like every kid did at one point. So I just started riding around my apartment complex as fast as I can jumping every speed bump and curb cut like I was in a race. I guess that's how it started, and then I saw that movie "BMX Bandits" and it was over after that lol. Then I remember I broke my cranks and my moms sold it and got me a mountain bike. I was bummed lol.
What did you have to do to get your first bike?
Clay: I had to do what every kid in Jr. High had to do. Clean the house, cut the grass stuff like that around the house. Then one day my mom's old boy friend showed up with a chrome Dyno VFR. Changed my life.
Who were the people you rode with in the beginning?
Clay: I started riding by myself for a while, then I moved to West Phoenix in Jr. High and met a bunch of kids who again raced. By this time all I rode was street, but they rode bmx so I was with it. Shouts out to Lee Pacheco, me and him rode a lot together when I first started.
How far did you have to go to get to a place you wanted to ride at?
Clay: I would just go across the street from my house and ride around this grocery store and gas station all day. Then we got sick of that and we would raise our seat posts as high as they would go and pedal all the way to downtown Phoenix just to ride something new. That was probably a 15 mile bike ride! Once I got a little older and better at riding, I realized my high school was probably one of the best spots I have ever seen. Still to this day one of the best spots! So we rode there and this Auto Zone A LOT. Until we got cars, then we were everywhere and anywhere.
Have you always been into riding street?
Clay: Yea pretty much, as a kid that's what I started riding. There were no skate parks or anything like that around where I lived. So I would just jump off loading docks and stairs and do wall rides until I discovered pegs! I got a little older and linked up with some older dudes who had cars. They would always drive to trails back when there were trails everywhere in Phx. So I tried and failed most of the time at riding dirt haha. Then we would go ride street after that and that's when I would get down.
What did you think when Nigel asked you to join the Mirraco team?
Clay: Man... When I first got that message from him on facebook, I was like this can't be the real Nigel! I thought someone made a facebook for him and they were messing with me lol. But once I did meet him in Vegas at Interbike it felt real, and I was seriously shocked and honored at the same time. It was crazy!
How has the bike worked out for you so far?
Clay: Real good! Nice and light, everything is dialed. Best bike I have ever owned.
Do you have a good group of riders you get to ride with from time to time?
Clay: Ya I do, I usually only ride with my close homies, we all grew up together and are more like brothers. There used to be a whole clan of us but sometimes real life steps in the way of riding. Shout out to Robbie, Jeremy, Bluex, Tony, Jimmy, Danny Williams, Billy, Jason and Justin Monzingo.
Is somebody bringing a camera along all the time to film or is it just riding/hanging out most of the time?
Clay: Well during the week it's pretty chill, we're all grown ups now and have to work and pay bills haha. So the no fun gun doesn't come out until the weekend especially Sunday. That's the day we try and film the most, it's the only day we can all actually ride together anymore.
Do you have any plans for the near future?
Clay: Just ride and travel, escape the 115 degree heat in Phx for a couple of weeks. Try and film a banging part for Peg-leg2! Hopefully get a job in the industry so I can quit my "real" job and be more involved with something I have been into my whole life. And get TRU-CITY off the ground! Oh and meet DAVE MIRRA! lol
Thanks to:
Everyone that has ever helped me out with parts or a ride or a place to stay while traveling. Nigel and everyone at Mirraco for this opportunity I really appreciate it. All the homies from Avondale to Tempe to Albuquerque because when you look at it, it's all about bikes. Peace!

Chris Hughes interview
Name: Christopher Hughes
Age: 23
Hometown: Simi Valley California
Sponsors: Mirraco bikes, LA Pride clothing, Sun Ringle, Vans shoes flow, Team Soil
What made you move to Greenville, NC?
Chris: James Foster moved here and he made me! Haha I came here on a trip with Team Soil and had a great time. I was really stoked there were a lot of good places to ride park. So I packed my life into two suit cases and I took a leap of faith.
Is Greenville working out for you for the reasons you moved there?
Chris: Greenville has changed my life in so many ways. It's almost like we have our own little secret society. So many people to ride with and so much to learn.
So I will say yes Greenville is definitely working out for me.
What does a normal day for Chirs Hughes look like?
Chris: Step one is drink my morning Coffee! Then I usually play guitar for a few hours, Craig Mast and myself have like a little music thing going on, we play music together at least 4 days a week. Do some at home exercises like lunges, crunches, and push ups. Eat lots of food. Then usually ride with everyone at the animal house, from 4:30 until 8:30 give or take. After we ride we all get together and hit the night life. Honestly that pretty much sums up everyday.
Who can you always call if you feel like riding?
Chris: Kyle Baldock is always down for riding, other then that most people just wait till we ride sessions.
When you ride, do you ride for fun, or do you want to progress?
Chris: If I'm not having fun I will not progress. So I always try to have fun otherwise it would feel like work. So you could say both.
What bike do you ride at the moment?
Chris: I'm riding the Mirraco Stalag, and it's honestly my favorite bike I've ever had. It seriously feels perfect for me, it's got a 20.8" top tube, it's really light and it looks really good.
Does it have to look good all the time?
Chris: Yes, I have to be dressed the way I like, to feel right and when it comes to riding, over the years style has become very important to me. Anyone can do the next gnarly trick but if it looks bad, what's the point. Style is what separates us and defines us.
If something’s loose, do you fix it right away, when you get home, or next week or so?
Chris: I fix it right away. I hate when things on my bike rattle, it drives me nuts!
If you brake a part on your bike and you don’t have an extra one laying around, where is the place to go to in Greenville to fix it up?
Chris: Usually I would go to James Fosters' house but he moved back to California!
What are some of the side activities that you’re into?
Chris: Like I said before I love to play music it consumes a lot of my time. I also enjoy playing with cars and driving them fast on the track. I recently jumped out of a plane and I want to do that more often, it was so much fun. Guettler, Buckworth, Baldock, and myself all have paintball guns and it seems our interest in paintball is growing as well.
Tell something about the “Can’t stop” knuckle tattoo?
Chris: Haha. Well, Kyle and I went on a trip with Mirra to Kansas City. While we were there we went to a Motley Crue show, and I met a tattoo artist who was stoked on BMX and he invited us to check out his shop. He ended up having a sick shop called "Hollwoods house of ink" in Lees summit mo. We were so stoked we decided to get our knuckles done so I got Cant stop. It has a double meaning, one I ride brakeless and I can't stop haha. Second meaning is it stands for I can't stop being who I am and I won't stop.
Any last words?
Chris: Live Life, Have fun, Try not to think too hard, and The difference between those who can and those who can't is those who try. Keep riding your bikes kids!

An Austin Coleman interview. Stayin' busy.
What have you been up to lately?
Austin:Been getting accustomed to the sweaty Florida weather and working on some video projects here in the Miami Area. Dabbling in Real-Estate and shredding everyday!
Can you list the places/countries you visited since the beginning of the year 2011?
Austin:
Los Angeles, CA (4 Times)
Montreal, Quebec
Boston
Woodward Camp, PA
New York City, NY (3 Times)
Paris, France
Tom's River, NJ
Greenville, NC
Shanghai, China
San Francisco, CA
The Bahamas
Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Fl
Woodward West, CA
Austin, TX
I think I got 'em all in there.. haha
Tell us a good story from being on the road?
Austin: Before I moved all the way south to Miami from Greenville, I decided to take a road trip the farthest north in North America I had been. So I loaded up the Audi Wagon with as much BMX, Camping and Snow Gear I could pack and drove north to explore the mountains north of Montreal Quebec in -25 F' weather. When I got to the Canadian Border, the Border Patrol saw a California ID, a North Carolina address, and Chinese Currency from a previous trip in my car and didn't believe my road trip story. I think they thought I was a spy. They emptied all my luggage onto the ground and stripped the car while I stood and watched nearly at gunpoint. I almost froze. Calm down Canada, I just like road trips.
What was it like being on Times Square for a BMX contest?
Austin: The Air in the Square comp was amazing! At 42nd St and Broadway at Times Square in New York City, you kind of feel like you are in the biggest arena in the world. In an area of the city so rich with history and media, you kind of feel like the whole world is watching you every time you drop in. It went even better than everyone anticipated. and on top of it all, the "tough New York crowd" loved BMX!
You recently moved to Florida. What’s it like living at a place with a swimming pool and ramps in the backyard?
Austin: Florida is awesome. I really think it might be the only other place a Southern California native should be living. By the time I moved out of Greenville I was definitely ready to be back near the metropolis. I was headed back to LA originally, but Mike Spinner and I started talking a bunch and I ended up at his place. The scene here is hands down amazing. Its hard to believe I have my bedroom, the pool, my friends, and the skatepark all within 50ft of each other. On top of that, the most famous beach spots and music venues in the world are all within a 20 min drive. I've been schmoozing around South Beach lately and having a great time. There's so much to get in to. If we could turn down the heat, humidity, and mosquitoes a little bit, it almost feel like Southern California haha.
What does a perfect day for you look like?
Austin: If I'm in town, I'd wake up at 12…ish. Prepare a big breakfast; fresh fruits, eggs, ground coffee. Its hard to get those things on the road prepared the way you like them. I try to stay busy with lots of small projects anything from real estate to party planning, so I'd then hit the computer desk for a bit and chat on the phone or handle any emails or business. Then its off to the beach with friends, or a book, to take a nap, or all three. In florida it stays pretty warm during the day so the sessions happen in the late afternoon. I'd ride around 5 till sunset, hit the shower, grab dinner and invite some friends over. If I'm out of town the perfect days include a passport, a plane, a train, a cafe and meeting a smiling new face.
Do you feel like you’re living the dream?
Austin: Depends on who's dream we're talking about.. haha. I'm not sure the 54 year old accountant down the street ever dreamed of doing 3 flips in his backyard. Mine? absolutely.
You’ve been commentating at BMX comps before. Is that something you like doing? Is this something you would like to keep doing in the future?
Austin: I enjoy the commentary a lot.. I always try to have fun a contests but with all the things going on, sometimes its easy get stressed out. Doing commentary allows me to step out of the roll of being an athlete, become a fan again and pass on that excitement to the listeners. If I can't psych people up about BMX by riding it, watching and talking about other guys shredding it is the next best thing. I think I'll do more events.
What’s your take on the Megaramp events that are popping up more often?
Austin: Megaramp is an event I didn't really understand at first. It always seemed unnecessarily dangerous to take ramp that was originally designed for "stunts" and have a competition on it. But if you think about it, thats pretty much how all ramp contests started. After I rode the Mega Ramp, I gained a different perspective. From the first Mat Hoffman and Danny Way videos I saw I thought it was a silly, terrifying beast. And after seeing it in person, there's no way I would of guessed I'd be seasoning and competing on it. After the initial fear is gone, it really is a fun ramp, and I see a lot more potential for growth. Like any kind of ramp riding, you have to know your boundaries, respect the ramp, and take the right precautions. After that, game on its all fun from there!
You could basically ride at any contest out there whether it’s Park, Street, Dirt, or Megaramp. How’s your flatland these days?
Austin: My flatland definitely needs some work, but that's not going to keep me from entering a comp if someone told me I could haha. One of the reasons I got into BMX was because you could ride it over almost anything obstacle, anywhere. I grew up watching guys like Dave Mirra, Jay Miron, and Rob Nolli take the word FREEstyle to heart, and I thought that was awesome. I figure if riding 1 thing is fun, riding 5 different things will be 5 times more fun. I never try to limit myself, maybe racing is next? Totally kidding, ..although I think I can pedal pretty fast..
Thanks for your time Austin. Any shout outs?
Austin: Freddie, Jeanette, and Nick Coleman. California Dreamin.
