Chris Hughes' trip report

Last week I decided to take a road trip from Greenville, NC, to New Hampshire for the 2010 Rye Airfield Wicked Jam. On Wednesday night last week at about 11 pm we decided to pack up and leave. It was kind of a last minute decision, but we were all set on going, so we drove all through the night. We decided to make a pit stop at 7:30 am in Lakewood, NJ to ride at the Incline Club. The park wasn't going to open until 2:00 pm, so we slept in the car for a few hours. We woke up and put our bikes together to have a sesh. I was having a great time; the park was super fun. I snapped my axle in half trying to learn crank arm slides. Luckily for me STAFF BMX was on site and helped me get a new hub and get me rolling again.

On our way up the coast we stopped and hung out in Massachusetts with Brandon Christie and his family. It was a nice little vacation.

We arrived at Rye Airfield on Saturday morning.

I enjoyed watching all the ams shred in the different divisions and everyone seemed to be having a great time riding their bikes. After the ams finished up, pro practice began. The Rye Airfield has endless flowing lines and two super fun box jumps. After about an hour of practice, pro qualifying began. I was in the last heat so I had a better idea of what I needed to do. I had a good ride and I felt I was riding pretty consistent. I found out later that I made finals and so did my friends Ryan Taylor and Brandon Christie!

Finals were the next day.

Practice for finals started around noon. I felt pretty good and learned some new lines. I found a wall ride transfer that I wanted to barspin to during my run. I went for it and I had a pretty bad crash about 5 minutes before finals were to begin. I didn't make it all the way to the wall and I rode into the flat bottom. I smacked both my knees really hard and was having a hard time riding afterwards. Finals began and I started out with a 720 turndown into a front flip. I crashed on my frontflip because I missed my snap. I wasn't feeling it at all, but all I really wanted was to just have a consistent run. It was a jam format so I had a few more chances to try and get it together. I decided I wanted to send a body varial, so the next run I dropped in and I pulled it! After landing that, I felt proper again. My adrenaline was going good so the pain went away. I still had some tricks on my mind that I hadn't sent yet. The first was a flip barspin... I have been working on it back at Mirra's warehouse in Greenville, but had never done it on a real box. I sent the flip bar and cased a little, but i still pulled it. I only had one trick left on my mind... a 900. I have tried it a bunch in the past, but had no luck pulling it. I sent it and I crashed. I didn't get hurt so I tried again. On the second try I landed my first 900! I was really happy with my run and I had a great time....

It ended up that my run was good enough to take my first win in a pro park contest :)

BIG thanks to Brian Hunt and the Rye Airfield for putting together a great contest at an awesome skatepark. I will definitely be back to ride Rye again soon.

Gatorade Go All Day - Nigel Sylvester in Japan by Defgrip

Gatorade has spent many years researching and understanding what goes on in traditional athletes bodies when they are doing their sports. Whether it be hydration levels or information about how their body reacts to the most intense moments, Gatorade and their sport scientists have a pretty good idea about what’s going on with—like I said—their traditional athletes… Action sports on the other hand, that’s a totally different story.

This year, Gatorade’s theme is “Go All Day.” In celebrating that theme, Gatorade wanted to start doing research on the non-traditional sports like BMX, so they hit up Nigel Sylvester, who rides for Gatorade and asked him a pretty crazy question: If you could go anywhere in the world to ride bikes with his friends, where would you go? That’s a very heavy question to ask someone, even Nigel… so after lots of research and different ideas being thrown around, Japan was chosen as the destination! With it’s huge city, amazing architecture, and lots of un-tapped spots, Japan would be the perfect location.

To document the trip, Gatorade invited a few key BMX media outlets, including Defgrip, to go along for the ride. The video you are about to watch documents the trip from the riding and research, to the culture and adventures and to coincide with the video, Defgrip will have a photo gallery with a more detailed story going up next week!

Huge thanks to Nigel and Gatorade for putting this trip together and we hope you enjoy the video!

Third for Coleman in Berlin, Germany

It was a bit of a trip to fly over to Berlin for a one-day contest but in the end it was worth it. Austin Coleman accepted the invitation for the vert contest and flew over to Germany. On arrival his bike made it, but his clothes didn't. Some riders missed everything and some got it all but most importantly Austin's bike and pads made it. After borrowing some clothes and shoes it was off to the brand new vert ramp to show what he's got. After beating one rider in a head to head format contest with double whips and flairs, Austin made it to the final round which was broadcasted live on MTV Germany.

Steve McCann rode on a borrowed bike with borrowed protection gear and settled for 4th in the finals. Austin ended up in third doing one-handed whips, a back to back double whip to double downside whip and some flairs. Coco Zurita finished in 2nd and the first place check was for Vince Byron.

Alessandro Barbero came over from Italy and rode against Dean Cueson in the first round. Each had 2 one-minute runs and after run one Barbero had to step it up in run 2 to transfer. Stepping up he did until a deep landing ended the rhythm and cost him a transfer spot.

Vert results:
1. Vince Byron
2. Coco Zurita
3. Austin Coleman

Street results:
1. Maddog
2. Bruno Hoffmann
3. Alex Coleborn

New movie about Greenville. Involves Mirraco riders.

How did a small town in the middle of nowhere become one of the most important places in the world for BMX?

Greenville, North Carolina appears to be a typical small town, but over the past 15 years it’s become Mecca for competitive BMX. With 34 professional riders, 21 X Games gold medals, and countless other contest wins, Greenville has produced more top BMX-talent than any city in the world. All in a remote town tucked away on the East Coast.

“Pro Town: Greenville” completely illustrates what makes Greenville tick. From the arrival of BMX icon Dave Mirra in 1994, the movie describes how the town grew into a BMX powerhouse. The 45-minute movie is packed with incredible footage and photographs (both current and archival), plus revealing interviews with Dave Mirra, Ryan Nyquist, Colin Mackay, Ryan Guettler, Rob Darden, Allan Cooke, Josh Harrington, and many more.

Watch for the exclusive "Pro Town: Greenville" trailer on RideBMX.com on Monday, November 29th.

"Pro Town: Greenville" will premiere in January 2011. For more information, please email info@protownmovie.com. Keep an eye on facebook.com/ProTownMovie for more updates.

Harry is going to sit out next week's high level comp in Berlin, Germany but will still be there representing the Monster Army. Other Mirraco riders in Berlin next week are Alessandro Barbero and Austin Coleman.

The weather in Greenville was not that great for a few days. So we got a few guys together (Andy Buckworth, Chris Hughes, Jaie Toohey, and Vince Byron) and traveled to the Raleigh/Durham Triangle area of N.C. for the afternoon. The weather was great, as was the riding. It goes to show, if the weather is getting bad, you can always get in a car and go find the sun.

An update from Mirraco's Kyle Baldock

I am currently packing to leave to Sydney tomorrow morning for a JC demo in Broken Hill. Then the following weekend I am off to Sydney to compete in the X-sport games. I'm missing Greenville but luckily the GC Compound opened and asked me to be on the GC compound team. It's an awesome indoor skatepark with box jumps, three massive foam pits and a sweet mini ramp. Best place on the coast to keep up your tricks.

I've been lucky enough to be riding with Greg Phillips, Chance Brejnakowski, Khiel Hadfield and Logan Martin. I have recently moved out of home with my girlfriend and I'm loving it. It's great to be out on your own.

Regards,

-Kyle Baldock
